Define Contextual Advertising | What is Contextual Advertising?

Contextual advertising refers to displaying ads on a website related to the text, images, videos, graphics and other media of your webpage. Advertising websites use different techniques like crawlers and sitemaps which lets them know about the niche of your website.

The quantity of words helps those crawlers to determine the exact niche of websites. That is why it is recommended to write long articles which use more and more of the key words which best describe your website. It helps them to get better idea of the niche of your website.

What is Niche?

Niche is defined as the specialty or distinct direction of a website. Like there are different categories a blog can be divided into:
  • Technology
  • Lifestyle
  • Cooking
  • Designing
  • Vlogs (short for video blogs)
  • Parody Blogs
  • Business Related
  • Professional Blogs

And there are so many other types of blogs. You can almost say that if a person started to write about a new topic it would fall in one of these categories or niches is the right word.
Once the topic is decided, the content inside the blog acts some what like a branch of a big tree.

Internet Advertising Giants

There are advertising websites on the internet that use this information from the website to show relevant ads. To name a few Google Adsense, Infolinks and Chitika are a few of them. All these are using the concept of contextual advertising to make millions of businesses find their relevant audiences through different campaigns. But one special website that is also using this concept is

Internet Advertising Giants Facebook

Facebook

Yes, it is facebook. In the second quarter of 2017 facebook gained a hefty sum of 9.32 billion dollars only through online advertising. With over two billion users facebook is definitely the world's largest social network. But how does facebook use the concept of contextual advertising?

Its not like we share our interests with facebook or anything... oh wait. Every page you like describes your interest, even its educational or entertainment, facebook can use this information to categorize you.

Ever had a page on facebook, every now and then facebook gives page owners the option to "Boost  Post" or "Boost Page".

Facebook Promote Website Button

Facebook then prompts you to select type of audience that best suits your page according to the interests you point out for your page.

Facebook Boost Post Options

This not only works for facebook pages and posts but also independent websites and blogs that want to gain audience attention through social media marketing. Although according to experts of social media marketing "if you are paying for it, you're not doing it right," but it does get the job done.
